It all comes from our need to form communities. We all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves... but SMALLER than the world. We want to be part of an exclusive group.
But you take things too far when you create a culture based on fake originality. Based on creating crap because talent is too hard. Apathy is one thing... but pretending to be apathetic is the lowest form of deception. It's self-deception.
The only way to be acceptably unique is to stop caring. When that happens, your unique elements will shine through on their own and you can stop wearing emo glasses and start not sucking.
